George W. Spaulding

Company A, 4th Michigan Infantry

From Monroe, George enlisted June 20, 1861 as First Sergeant. Commissioned 1st Lieutenant of Company B on August 5, 1861, then Captain on January 13, 1862. Wounded in action on July 1, 1862. Resigned 17 days later and re-entered service as Lieutenant Colonel. Provost Marshall from June 14, 1863 until January of 1864. Resigned February 21, 1864 to accept rank of Colonel, 12th Tennessee Cavalry. He was promoted to Brigadier General, U.S. Volunteers March 21, 1865 for valuable services in the battle of Nashville, Tennessee. Honorably discharged October 24, 1865. He is buried in Woodland Cemetery, Monroe, Michigan
