Hiram enlisted at Jackson, Michigan for 3 years of service on February 25, 1864 at the age of 42. He was discharged at McDougall Hospital, New York Harbor on June 1, 1865. He is buried at Eaton Rapids, Michigan

He was a cousin of Ulysses Simpson Grant.
