Thomas enlisted at Blackman, Michigan at the age of 18 for 3 years of service on October 25, 1862 and took the muster oath on the same day. He reached the regiment at Falmouth, Virginia on November 28, 1862. He was on duty with the 20th Infantry from January 7, 1864 to April 6, 1864. He was transferred to the Veteran reserve Corps on January 20, 1865. He was discharged at Camp Dennison, Ohio on October 11, 1865 from the 43rd Company , 2nd Battalion of the Veteran Reserve Corps..
