From Jackson, Michigan, Putnam enlisted on November 27, 1861 for 3 years of service at age 18. He re-enlisted at Rossville, Ga on February 6, 1864. He attained the rank of Corporal before his muster out at Louisville, Kentucky on July 19, 1865. His brother Alva of the 1st Engineers is the man on his left
